First Impressions: My Big Fat Fabulous Life

Yeah. It’s been a long (bleeping) time since I have updated my blog. So long that I’m not even going to count back how far. Do I have a good excuse? Well… does binge watching Netflix and naps count as a good excuse? Okay, maybe not. But I got lazy with writing. And by “lazy” I mean I couldn’t figure out what to write or how to put my thoughts down.

Soooo…. anyways… Here we are again. Happy 2015, y’all!

Okay, at this very moment I am watching a show called My Big Fat Fabulous Life on TLC. Have you heard about it? I just discovered it today. It’s about a gal named Whitney who was once a slender girl who loved to dance. But due to a condition called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), she gained over 200 pounds. With a fresh outlook on life, she is trying to find her way in this world, just like the rest of us.

Check out this video of Whitney discussing how dance helped her turn her life around.

I’ve only watched a bit of this show, but I absolutely love Whitney’s spirit! I can identify a bit with Whitney. I too was diagnosed with PCOS in my mid-20s. While I never gained 200 pounds, I have found it difficult to lose weight, a common side effect of this disease. Before you get all, “Well, just eat less, exercise more. Eat healthy foods. Blah, blah, blah!”, let me drop some knowledge on ya: With PCOS, you can do all the “right things” regarding weight loss and the scale still won’t budge. Often you can do all the “right things” and the scale will still go up. This is frustrating as hell!

Dude- before I go off on a total PCOS tangent, letย me get back to the fabulousness of Whitney.

Again, I absolutely love her. I love that she is out there enjoying life and not hiding or crying under the covers like some people expect fat girls to do. I love that she shows her vulnerabilities and struggles on the show. I love that she turns to dance, her first love and passion, to express herself, exercise, and help inspire others. Hats off to you Whitney!

I’ll Show You My Watchlist If You Show Me Yours

I tend to watch more movies than TV shows, but this year’s fall lineup has me excited to punch in the lower numbers on my remote. Network and cable have great selections of new and returning shows that I am excited to watch (even on CBS- which is big for me!). Here are a few of them I’m excited to catch.

The Michael J. Fox Show | Series premieres September 26 on ABC
First of all, it is hard not to love Michael J. Fox. From his time on Family Ties to his role as Marty McFly in the Back to The Future movies, I have loved Fox since the 80s. I’m thrilled to see him return to the small screen and I have a feeling millions will tune in to revisit our old friend.

Homeland | Season 3 premieres September 29 on Showtime
I was a huge fan of the show 24, and when the show ended I searched for other shows to fill that void. Homeland is one of two shows that does it for me (Cinemax’s Strike Back is the other one). Season 2 literally ended with a bang as — SPOILER ALERT! — several characters were killed and viewers were left wondering what will come of Carrie and Brody, both individually and as a couple. I can not wait until this show returns to Showtime. I have already added extra padding to the edge of my seat in preparation of the new season!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. | Series premieres September 24 on ABC
This is one of the most highly anticipated shows of the fall season and it’s no wonder. The Avengers film was a huge success at the box office and moviegoers simply can’t get enough superhero action. Joss Whedon who directed The Avengers film is also involved in this show about other superheroes. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the TV show characters makes his or her way into the next Avengers film. Viewers assemble!

Modern Family | Season 5 premieres September 25 on ABC
Modern Family is one of those great comedic gems that sadly doesn’t come around too often. I love the relatable situations and dry humor, not to mention all the little details that make this show one of the best on TV.

The Crazy Ones | Series premieres September 26 on CBS
It’s funny- when I first watched this trailer in late spring, it took me a while to remember that Robin Williams was on TV back in the 70s. This show marks Williams’ return to small screen comedy. I really hope the show is as funny as the trailer!

The Simpsons | Season 25 premieres September 29 on Fox
Hey- don’t you judge me for watching this show. I have been watching The Simpsons since almost the beginning, have seen every episode and still adore this show. The humor is smart and witty. And it is in its 25th season. That speaks volumes! These days shows are lucky if they get to finish their first season.

Bob’s Burgers | Season 4 premieres September 29 on Fox
This quirky animated show has been gaining fans with each season. I was initially a skeptic about this show but quickly embraced it. Love the snarky adult humor!

Those are just a few shows that I am dying to see this fall season. What about you?

Happy watching!

Celebrating July 4th: Me + Netflix Instant

I live in Nashville, TN and the weather for July 4th isn’t looking good for the Music City. A high of 75 sounds sublime. But the 80% chance of rain is, well, pretty messed up. Looks like those fireworks displays and cookouts will need to be on hold until the weekend… If we’re lucky.

Never fear. Netflix Instant is here!

True, rainy holidays can absolutely suck. But look on the bright side. This is a great chance to get caught up on favorite shows and start watching those movies on your bucket list.

Here are some recommendations of movies and TV shows to check out on Netflix Instant:

  • Captain America. It’s Independence Day after all. He’s a hero. He’s really cute. God bless America!
  • The Avengers. While we are on the Marvel super heroes theme, why not watch one of Netflix’s recent additions to the Instant lineup.
  • Thor. But before you watch The Avengers, check out this other Marvel goody to get the back story of two of The Avengers main characters.
  • Fringe. This Fox show recently ended its series run after five years. A great sci-fi show. Smartly written. Brilliantly acted. You can catch seasons 1-4 on Instant.
  • 24. If you have never watched this intense drama before, it’s okay. I forgive you. We can still be friends. But I urge you. It is your duty to start watching this show. All 8 seasons are on Instant. Start with season 1. Season 5 was the most intense. Overall this show was genius, addictive and deserved its iconic status. By the end you will fight the urge to yell “Damn it Chloe!”
  • Parks and Recreation. This show takes the mockumentary format and follows the park and recs department in Pawnee, IN. Amy Pohler stars in the show and every actor is perfectly cast. Even Ron Swanson’s mustache.
  • Super 8. I’m a fan of J. J. Abrams’ work and his film about young kids who witness an alien encounter while shooting their own movie is a mix of The Goonies meets Close Encounters. Nice option for the whole family.
  • The Walking Dead. What’s more American that watching a show about zombies? Seasons 1 and 2 are available on Instant.
  • Mission Impossible films 1-4. Hey, today is Tom Cruise’s birthday! I can think of no better gift that to watch Tom run from the bad guys in these films.

Happy watching! And I hope you have a very Happy 4th of July!

5 Movie Picks for the Weekend: June 7-9

It’s the weekend! Whoo-hoo! We made it through another week.

So what are you doing this weekend? I’m sure at some point you will be watching a bit of TV or picking a movie to watch. Here are 5 picks for films to watch at home this weekend.

These picks are found on Comcast premium channels. All times Central.

Cache, 9:40-11:40pm Friday on Indie channel
This French film stars Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche as a successful couple who start receiving disturbing videotapes of their personal lives. Great thriller!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, starting at 7pm Friday on Sundance.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 7-10:15pm
The Girl Who Played with Fire, 10:15-1:30am
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, 1:30-4:45am
This is the original 2009 trilogy based on the best-selling books. If you’re going to be up late, it is worth a viewing. Series is also on Netflix Instant Streaming.

Pan’s Labyrinth, 6-8:30am, Saturday on IFC
One of my favorite films, this grown-up fairy tale by director Guillermo del Toro is about a young girl in fascist Spain who escapes her hellish world in an imaginative and very dark fantasy realm. If you’re going to be up early tomorrow- or you stayed up late watching the Dragon trilogy!- I highly recommend this movie. Please note: while this is a fairy tale, it is TV-MA and I do not recommend it for young children. It is quite dark. Watch out for The Thin Man!

Dog Day Afternoon, Sundance, 7-9:15pm Sat (also plays 7:45-10am on Sunday)
An engrossing classic film starring Al Pacino in the real-life story of an attempted bank robbery. Stunning ensemble cast and story. Directed by the amazing Sidney Lumet (love his work!), this film also stars John Cazale.

All The President’s Men, Sundance 9-11:30p, Sun
Another classic, this film is an account of the Watergate scandal from the perspective of two journalists. Stars Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford. A great way to wrap up the weekend!

Whatever you watch this weekend, enjoy yourself! Pop some popcorn. Dim the lights. And enjoy the show!

Happy viewing!

Why HGTV Will Get Me In Trouble…

I have recently discovered that I love watching Flea Market Flip on HGTV! On the show, two teams find antiques and treasures they can refurbish and sell. The team that makes the most profit wins the challenge.

Watching this show inspires me to hit every yard sale in town to buy things I can fix up myself. And that is also a problem. One, I don’t need to commit myself to too many projects. Two, I realize I can be dangerous with a spray can of paint in my hands. I’m not exactly channeling my inner Banksy, but still.

What TV shows inspire you to try new things?
